Disease-resistant cultivar from Purdue/Rutgers/Illinois; suited for temperate zones.
The Sunny apple, also known as Co-op29, was introduced in 1988 by PRI, a cooperative breeding program involving Purdue, Rutgers, and the University of Illinois.
The apple was selected in 1979 from a block of seedlings created in 1973 as part of an effort to develop scab-resistant varieties. Its parentage is quite complex: it was created by cross-pollinating the experimental variety PRI 1018-101 with the experimental variety NJ50.
