The Hackworth apple was discovered in the mid-1800s as a chance seedling near an old orchard downstream from Lavonia, Georgia. It was cultivated and promoted by Dr. Nichodemus Hackworth, a dentist and passionate horticulturalist from Morgan County, Alabama.
