The Black Gilliflower apple is an American heirloom variety that originated in Connecticut during the early 1700s.

The apple was first documented in 1841 in The Magazine of Horticulture and was listed under the name "Red Gilliflower." It was also recorded with the same synonym in A.J. Downing's 1845 book, The Fruit and Fruit Trees of America.

In The Apples of New York, published in 1905, author S.A. Beach noted that the apple was brought to central and western New York by settlers more than a century prior and was known in Connecticut as early as the late 1700s.

Although the exact parentage of the Black Gilliflower is unknown, there is some speculation that it may have provided the pollen for the famous Stark Delicious apple.
