The Carter's Blue apple originated in the 1840s and was cultivated by Colonel Carter at Mount Meigs Depot in Alabama.  It was believed to be a lost variety until it was rediscovered in the UK's National Fruit Collection by Lee Calhoun, a researcher known for finding lost apple varieties.
