The Cannon Pearmain apple is an heirloom variety believed to have originated in either Virginia or North Carolina during the late 1700s.
Its first documented mention was in an 1804 advertisement for Bailey Nursery in the Virginia Argus newspaper.
The apple was presumed to be extinct by the 1950s, but a single surviving tree was rediscovered near Lynchville, Virginia in 1998. Thanks to this discovery, the variety has been brought back and is once again available to growers.
